Answers to optical cross problems

PUTTING THE PRESCRIPTION ON THE OPTICAL CROSS
  1. Combine the sphere reading and the axis of the prescription.
  2. Add together the sphere and the cylinder amount.
  3. If the axis is less than or equal to 90, add 90 to it. If the axis is greater than 90, subtract 90 from it.
  4. Combine the power in step 2 with the axis in step 3.

    Place on the optical cross:
  1. +5.00 +1.00 x135
  2. The diagram has +5.00 and 135 on one leg, and +6.00 and 45 on the other leg.

  3. -1.25 -3.25 x045
  4. The diagram has -1.25 and 45 on one leg, and -4.50 and 135 on the other leg.

  5. +3.50 -3.50 x090
  6. The diagram has +3.50 and 90 on one leg, and pl and 180 on the other leg.

  7. pl -1.25 x 110
  8. The diagram has pl and 110 on one leg, and -1.25 and 20 on the other leg.

  9. +0.50 -1.75 x115
  10. The diagram has +0.50 and 115 on one leg, and -1.25 and 25 on the other leg.

TAKING THE PRESCRIPTION OFF THE OPTICAL CROSS
    1. Choose one power/axis combination.
      • If you are doing minus cylinder form, choose the most plus or least minus -- the highest one on the scale at the bottom of page 43.
      • If you are doing plus cylinder form, choose the least plus or most minus -- the lowest one on the scale at the bottom of page 43
    2. Write the power from this power/axis combination as the sphere power.

    3. Write the axis from this power/axis combination as the axis.
    4. Subtract the power you used from the power you did not use.
    5. Write the result of step 3 as the cylinder amount.

Write the prescription in minus cylinder form:

    6.

    7.

    8.

Write the prescription in plus cylinder form:

    9.

    10.

    11.
