LONGITUDINAL WAVES

There are two ways of propagating a wave: LONGITUDINAL and TRANSVERSE.

In LONGITUDINAL waves, the individual particles of the medium supporting the wave move parallel to the direction of the movement of the wave.

This means that if the MEDIUM is a spring, then the individual coils of the spring move side to side when the wave moves from left to right.

Sound waves travel this way. The individual air molecules vibrate in the direction that the sound travels.
