2. Amplitudes equal?
To insure that the amount of light reflected from each surface is the same, allowing for complete destructive interference at the chosen wavelength, the reflections at each surface (air to coating, coating to lens) must be equal.
For that to happen, the index of the coating must be the square root of the index of the lens material.
